Our History

MissionĀ® is a proud subsidiary of Gruma Corporation, which began in 1949. Gruma is the leading tortilla manufacturer worldwide, delivering the authentic Mexican flavors you know and love from MissionĀ®.

Gruma Founding
Mr. Roberto González Barrera, and his father Mr. Roberto M. González Gutiérrez founded Missions'® parent company Grumain Cerralvo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

Their innovative methods allowed tortilla dough to be preserved for extended periods of time, while retaining the authentic taste of Mexico's staple food.

Mission Founding
Gruma purchased Mission® in California.Working together, the two companies continued their unique innovations and successful methods.

Dallas tortilla Plant
As Gruma expanded, Mission® grew as well, opening a tortilla manufacturing plant in Dallas.

Gruma and Mission® continued to grow, with the opening of a tortilla mega-plant in Los Angeles, which is now the world's largest producer of tortillas.

Disney California Adventure opens Mission®attraction
Mission® sponsored a tortilla factory attraction at Disney California Adventureuntil 2011. Guests were treated to a mini-version of one of our factories, complete with free samples and delicious recipes.

Moms to Marketer Summit
Mission®sponsored the sold-out Mom 2.0 Summit: An Open Conversation Between Mom & Marketers. The more than 350 attendees included top bloggers and social media influencers from around the country.

Sponsorship, Sustainability Efforts, and More

In 2010, Mission® became the Official Tortilla and Tortilla Chip of the Chicago White Sox.

Mission® brought 400 jobs and an immeasurably positive impact to the economy of the San Fernando Valley with the opening of a 200,000 square foot factory in Panorama City.

Through the sustainability efforts of our Mission®Green program, we were able to:

  • Convert product line from refrigerated to shelf-stable and reduce our carbon footprint through more efficient energy consumption and transportation
  • Achieve LEED Gold Certification for our new Panorama City plant
  • Become a partner of The Climate Registry, a non-profit collaboration that sets and calculates greenhouse emission standards

In 2011, Mission® launched the new Mission® Artisan Tortillas, which are now available in four delicious varieties: Corn & Wheat Blend, Blue Corn & Flaxseed, Wheat & Black Bean, and Multigrain. 

In 2012, Mission® launched the new Mission® Organics Tortilla Chips in three delicious varieties: Blue Corn, Multigrain, and White Corn. 

Mission also became the official tortilla & tortilla chip of the Texas Rangers and Green Bay Packers.

In 2013, Mission® launched the new and improved Super Soft flour tortillas that you know and love and also became the proud sponsor of the Wounded Warrior Project® where it donated 10 cents (totaling up to $250,000) for each specially marked package sold.
